This classic Asian Chow Mein recipe takes just 30-minutes to make room scratch. This recipe is extremely versatile and can also be made with Chicken or Beef or any of your favorite Meat.
Just like my other Asian favorites like Lo-Mein, Mongolian Chicken, Orange Chicken, this has become my all-time favorite!

When I was a child, it was the growing craze of Asian Recipes which had taken over our regular Indian food. I remember I used to ask mom to make Noodles every Sunday for me and we used to slurp it right in front of our Big Old TV! It was such a fun and simple time.
With time, Asian recipes have grown so much that today you find people selling noodles and other Asian Takeouts at almost every other street. It is seriously something which has seen the most popularity! No other cuisine has got so much love and exposure as compared to Asian cuisine!

What is the difference between Lo Mein and Chow Mein
If you are used to Asian recipes or if you like them, you must have had Lo Mein. While Chow Mein means Fried Noodles which means the noodles are crunchy here whereas in Lo Mein the noodles are tossed and cooked along with the veggies, which is why they are called cooked noodles.

Is Chow Mein Healthy?
Actually, yes! Chow Mein is made with wheat noodles and is tossed with very little oil and veggies. So, these are absolutely healthy and great ways to incorporate veggies into your regular diet.
Vegan Chow Mein
Chow Mein is absolutely Vegan. These are made with Whole Wheat flour and are cooked in Sesame Oil. So this is absolutely healthy. You can cook this with veggies to make a perfect Vegan Chow Mein dinner for yourself.
How to make Vegetable Chow Mein
Below is a brief description of how to make Vegetable Chow Mein. You can find the full recipe card below. Also, watch the video for a quick visual.
STEP 1: Make the Chow Mein Sauce
The Chow Mein sauce is the best part of this recipe. This Sweet and Sour Sauce is the perfect sauce over these Chow Mein Noodles.

- In a mixing jar, combine Sesame Oil, Light Soy Sauce, Oyster Sauce, Rice Vinegar, Tomato Ketchup, Sugar, Ground Pepper, and Cornstarch Slurry (Cornstarch + Water)
- Stir to combine everything until smooth.
STEP 2: Cooking the Chow Mein Noodles
- Cook the Chow Mein Noodles as per package directions, or,
- Bring a pot of water with salt to boil. As the water boils, add the Chow Mein noodles and cook for 2-3 minutes until the noodles get cooked.
- Drain the water using a colander and keep the Noodles aside.
STEP 3: Saute the Veggies
- Heat Sesame Oil in a Pan.
- As the oil shimmers, add the chopped Onions

- Saute the onions until translucent
- Add the finely chopped Garlic and toss for 1 minute
- Next add the Veggies - Mushrooms, Bell Peppers and Carrots
- Saute for 2-3 minutes until the veggies tenderize

- Add the cooked noodles (Do not stir)

- Pour the Sauce immediately. Add some water.

- Toss until combined.
STEP 4: Serve
- Serve this Vegetable Chow Mein.
- Garnish with scallions or green onions. (if desired)
Chow Mein Noodles are slippery and this is because, unlike Lo Mein, these are not cooked for long. These hold on to the flavors very well.
Can you make Chow Mein ahead of time?
Yes of course. You can cook Vegetable Chow Mein and cool it down to room temperature. Then you can store this in an Air Tight Container and refrigerate for 3 days. I like to add a little extra sauce while storing these because the sauces help them stay fresh for a long time.

Tips to make the best Vegetable Chow Mein
- Soy Sauce - You cannot skip Soy Sauce while making Chow Mein. If you have to replace this, then use Tamari or Worchestire Sauce as an alternative.
- Tofu Noodles - For a Healthy Option, use Tofu Noodles
- Sesame Oil - Use Sesame Oil for a perfect nutty taste in these noodles

Vegetable Chow Mein
INGREDIENTS
Chow Mein Sauce
- 1 tablespoon Sesame Oil
- ¼ cup Light Soy Sauce or Tamari
- 1 tablespoon Hoisin Sauce
- 2 teaspoon Granulated Sugar
- ¼ cup Rice Vinegar
- 1 teaspoon Ground Pepper
- 1 tablespoon Cornstarch
- 2 tablespoon Water
Chow Mein
- 1 Pack Chow Mein Noodles
- 1 teaspoon Salt to cook the noodles
- 1 teaspoon Olive Oil to cook the noodles
- 3 medium sized Onions thinly sliced
- 2 cloves Garlic minced
- 1 medium sized Bell Pepper thinly sliced
- 1 cup Mushrooms diced
- 1 medium sized Carrot thinly sliced
INSTRUCTIONS
- In a mixing jar, combine Sesame Oil with Light Soy Sauce, Rice Vinegar, Tomato Ketchup, Hoisin Sauce, Granulated Sugar, and Ground Pepper. Also, add Cornstarch slurry by combining 1 tablespoon of Cornstarch with 2 tablespoon of water and pour it into the sauce mixture. Stir until combined.
- Cook Chow Mein noodles as per package directions. Or Bring a pot of water to boil with some salt & olive oil. As the water boils, add the noodles and cook for 2-3 minutes or until al dente. Drain the water using a colander and keep it aside.
- Heat Sesame Oil in a Pan. As the oil shimmers, add the onions and fry until translucent. Next, add the garlic and toss for 1 minute. Next, add all the other chopped veggies and toss for 2-3 minutes or until the veggies tenderize.
- Next, add the cooked noodles to the veggies
- Pour the Sauce over the Noodles. Also, pour some water. Toss to combine everything.
- Serve Immediately.
