What do I love about this Bang Bang Shrimp?
I think the prime reason why people love Bang Bang Shrimp from Bonefish Grill is because of the sauce. Their Bang Bang Sauce is truly extraordinary. It's spicy, sweet, and creamy.
Also, the Shrimps are crispy and crunchy with the perfect tartness to them in every bite.
What makes Bonefish Grill Bang Bang Shrimp so special?
Bonefish Grill's one of the best recipes is Bang Bang Shrimp. I think the key reasons for its extraordinary popularity is-
- The perfect combination of sweet and savory: The sauce is spicy and equally sweet, while the Shrimps are savory and you love these contrasting flavor combinations.
- The crispy Shrimps - The Shrimps from Bonefish Grill's Bang Bang Shrimp are never overcooked. It's perfectly crispy and crunchy.
Ingredients used to make Bang Bang Shrimp
Below are the ingredients which you'll need to make Copycat Bonefish Grill Bang Bang Shrimp.
- 1/2 lbs (226gms) Deveined Shrimp - I have used 0.5 lbs of Shrimps which are deveined and cleaned.
- 1/4 cup (32gm) Cornflour - Cornflour is the only thing that you'll need to coat your Shrimps with. Yeah, that's right, you do not need Panko.
- 1/4 cup (32gm) Buttermilk - Buttermilk is required to dip the shrimps in it, before you coot it with Cornflour. This adds the perfect tartness to the shrimps and also makes them crispy.
- Canola Oil - Canola Oil is used for deep frying the Shrimps.
Besides this, you'll need the Bang Bang Sauce ingredients mentioned below.
Ingredients used to make the Bang Bang Sauce
- 2 tablespoon (16gm) Thai Sweet Chili Sauce - This is the most important ingredient for this sauce. It gives the typical sweet taste. You can find this in the International Aisle or at Asian Grocery stores or order it online.
- 1/4 cup (32gm) Mayonnaise - A good quality Mayonnaise is what makes this sauce creamy and gives it that Peachy - Light Orang-ish hue!
- 1/4 teaspoon Sriracha - Sriracha will make this Bang Bang Sauce spicy.
How to make Bang Bang Shrimp
So, making the Bang Bang Shrimp requires just three important steps, and it gets done in just 10 minutes.
Step 1: The first step is to make the Bang Bang Sauce. For this take a mixing bowl and combine Sriracha, Mayonnaise, and Thai Sweet Chili Sauce. Mix everything and keep this Bang Bang Sauce aside.
Step 2: Take the Deveined and cleaned shrimps in a bowl and toss it with some Buttermilk. After 2 minutes, of them being soaked in the Buttermilk, take them off, drip off the excess liquid, and throw them in a bowl full of cornflour. Mix well using a spoon so that the Shrimps get evenly coated with the Cornflour.
Step 3: Heat Canola Oil in a Skillet and once the Oil is at 145 C or 300 F, you can carefully place the Shrimps in the hot oil. Make sure to dust off the excess Flour from the Shrimp, and then place them in the hot oil. Also, do not forget to check the temperature of the hot oil with an oven thermometer before you throw in the Shrimps to get deep-fried.
What will happen if I use Cold Oil?
If you do not check the temperature and use Oil which is considerably cold, your Shrimps might get stuck to the bottom of the Pan and you will not be able to use them.
Also, if you use oil, which is too hot, your shrimps will blacken quickly and won't get cooked.
So, make sure you check the temperature of the Oil and use it only when it reaches 300F or 145 C.
Can I make Baked Bang Bang Shrimp?
Well, of course, you can! If you think that frying is too much of a tedious task, just place the well-coated Shrimps in a greased baking dish.
Spray the Cooking Spray over them and bake them for 10-15 minutes at 350F or 180C, or until they turn crispy and golden brown.
What to serve Bang Bang Shrimp with?
I love to serve this Bang Bang Shrimp with Coleslaw or Freshly Roasted Veggies.
My kids also love it with some Pasta. They make their very own Bang Bang Shrimp Pasta :).
You can toss this with some Rice or serve it as Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos by using this as a Taco Filling.
However, I think this is the best Party Appetizer. Especially for Game Nights, this makes for an excellent choice. Our Superbowl Fun is always incomplete without this Bonefish Grill Bang Bang Shrimp.
Can I make a Low Carb Keto Bang Bang Shrimp?
Of course, you can! You'll need to make the following replacements.
- Thai Sweet Chili Sauce - Replace the Thai Sweet Chili Sauce with Sambal Sambal is an Indonesian spice mix that you can find in Asian Grocery stores.
- Cornflour with Coconut Flour - To make a low carb - gluten free Bang Bang Shrimp, replace Cornflour with Coconut Flour.
- Canola Oil with Tallow Oil - Tallow Oil for deep frying is just perfect.
