Ingredients

  • Pizza dough, either homemade with yeast or store bought
  • Pizza sauce or Marinara also works
  • Mozzarella cheese slices for cutting ghosts
  • Black olives for ghost eyes and mouths
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish

Step by Step Directions

Prepare and Roll the Pizza Dough

  • Prepare your yeast dough and allow it to proof until doubled in size.
  • Roll out the proofed dough to your desired thickness on a floured surface.

Dock and Sauce the Crust

  • Use a fork to poke holes across the top of the dough so it does not rise too much during baking.
  • Spread an even layer of pizza sauce over the surface of the dough.

Bake the Pizza

  • Place the pizza in an oven preheated to 220°C.
  • Bake for 14 to 15 minutes until the crust is golden and the sauce is bubbling.

Decorate with Cheese Ghosts and Garnishes

  • Use a ghost shape cookie cutter to cut out multiple cheese ghosts from mozzarella slices.
  • Place the cheese ghosts on top of the hot baked pizza so they melt slightly.
  • Add small pieces of black olives for the eyes and a round slice for the mouth, then garnish with fresh basil leaves.

Variations and Alterations

  • Swap out regular pizza sauce for a white garlic sauce or barbecue sauce for a different flavor profile.
  • Use cheddar cheese or provolone cheese instead of mozzarella for alternative ghost colors and tastes.
  • Add pepperoni slices or bell peppers underneath the cheese for extra texture and heartiness.
  • Use sweet peppers or cherry tomatoes on the side to create a more colorful presentation.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • *If making Yeast Pizza Dough from scratch - Prepare your yeast dough and let it proof in a warm place until doubled in size.
Punch down the dough and roll it out into a circle on a lightly floured surface to your desired thickness.
  • Transfer the rolled-out dough to a baking sheet or pizza pan. Use a fork to poke small holes across the surface so it does not puff up unevenly while baking.
  • Spread an even layer of pizza sauce over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges for the crust.
  • Place the pizza in an oven preheated to 220°C (425°F).
Bake for 14 to 15 minutes until the crust is golden brown and crisp and the sauce is bubbling.
  • While the pizza bakes, slice the log of mozzarella cheese into thick pieces. Use a small ghost-shaped cookie cutter to cut out individual ghost shapes from the mozzarella.
  • Once the pizza is out of the oven, immediately place the cheese ghosts on top so they melt slightly from the residual heat.
  • Use tiny pieces of pitted black olives to create the eyes and mouths on each ghost, add fresh basil leaves between them, slice, and serve warm.

Notes

* If you're using Storebought Pizza Dough then skip step one and two.

  • You can try my recipe for No Yeast Pizza Dough as well.

Recipe Notes

  • * Dough Choice: You can easily save time by using store-bought pizza dough, or make your own favorite homemade yeast recipe.
  • Cheese Tips: Make sure your mozzarella log is cool and firm when cutting out the ghost shapes to get clean edges. Fresh ball mozzarella that is too wet may tear easily.
  • Make-Ahead Option: You can cut out the mozzarella ghosts ahead of time and keep them stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator until you are ready to assemble the freshly baked pizza.
