Why is regular Ketchup NOT Keto?
Keto diet means you will be cutting down on your carbohydrates and sugar intake, focusing on a primarily protein based diet instead that's rich with vitamins and antioxidants.
Basically, the keto diet is meant to cleanse your body of toxicity and excess fat. Now your regular Ketchup that is available in the market is absolutely NOT Keto friendly.

If you look at its ingredients you will see it has huge amounts of sugar, not to mention so many additives and preservatives. Regular ketchup is also very heavy when it comes to carbohydrates with no fibre in it either.
So yes, Ketchup is NOT keto. In fact it is not even healthy for people. Even if you don't follow Keto, having a Keto-friendly Ketchup can still be good for you!

What do you need to make Keto Ketchup?

The ingredients for making keto ketchup are easily available in most kitchen pantries.
And even if not, then you should be able to find them in your nearest grocery store.
And if you're wondering just how we will make ketchup that is free of sugar, then we have a surprise ingredient for you that will be the perfect replacement!
1. Tomato Paste
When we say tomato paste, we mean that you make the tomato paste yourself at home and not buy it pre-made as the market one will come with added sugar and we are trying to avoid that. It's pretty easy to make tomato paste as well! Just take your tomato pulp and bake it in the oven until it reduces to a paste! You can reduce it on the gas stove as well!
2. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apples and Tomatoes make for a wonderful combination together. It also helps that Apples are naturally sweet, which adds to the flavour profile.
Apple cider vinegar will also add some extra tanginess to the ketchup. Although there is a risk that your ketchup might taste a bit too much like apples. But don't worry as we have the solution for this!
3. White Vinegar
White vinegar has a nice aroma to it with a great hint of sourness to it, that goes well with the natural sweetness of tomatoes.
And since you are using concentrated tomato paste, you definitely need the sourness of white vinegar to balance it out.
In addition to that, white vinegar will also help cutting back on the apple cider, so that your keto ketchup will not taste like apples!
4. Your choice of Sweetener
There are actually plenty of healthier sweeteners you can use as a replacement for refined sugar.
The best among them are Keto Brown Sugar and Monk Fruit Sweetener. And while both are great options, we are a little more biased towards keto brown sugar for its similar taste to refined sugar.
Also, another secret ingredient to use as a sweetener is pitted Medjool Dates. Blend it in a high speed food processor along with some water and use it to make your Ketchup sweet.
Medjool Dates is the best source of natural sugar which is super healthy.
That way you can have your Keto Ketchup tasting as authentic as any regular market bought ketchup.
5. Onion and Garlic powder
These two are fairly neutral in their contribution of nutrients. Rest assured, they will not be adding any extra carbs or sugar to your keto ketchup. But what they will add is a lot of flavour!
Just make sure you use the unsalted version of onion and garlic powders as you don't want too much salt in your Keto Ketchup!
6. Salt
Remember that we are trying to be healthy here, so make sure you put only the minimal amount of salt for the extra flavour.
Too much sodium is not advised in a keto diet, or any healthy diet for that matter.
7. Water
Use drinking water and not tap water for thinning out ketchup. Also make sure it's light and not heavy on the stomach.
How to make Keto Ketchup?
Making Keto Ketchup is surprisingly very quick once you have all the ingredients ready and assembled.
At most it should take you thirty minutes to have your bowl of homemade Keto Ketchup ready to go!
- Take a saucepan pan that is small to medium in size, the latter being the better option
- Get started by adding all the ingredients in the saucepan while it is on low heat.
- Mix all the ingredients together and keep stirring it with your spatula (or spoon) until it starts to simmer up. Remember, you don't want your keto ketchup mixture to boil. You just want it to simmer as that'll mean the ingredients are thoroughly cooked.
- Now you can bring the heat to the absolutely lowest setting and just let the mix keep on simmering for about ten minutes.
- Make sure to keep stirring it as you don't want the mixture to stock on the bottom of the saucepan.

- Once the ten minutes have passed and the ketchup is sufficiently thick, turn off the heat and let it cool. Make sure that you turn the heat off a little early as the ketchup will continue to keep on getting thick as it cools at room temperature.
- Once it's cooled completely you can either use it immediately as your condiment or store it away for future use.
How to store Keto Ketchup?
This homemade Keto Ketchup does not have any added preservatives, so you'll need to be a little extra vigilant when it comes to storing it.
You cannot leave it out at room temperature as it'll spoil easily that way.
Instead you should pack your keto ketchup in an airtight bottle (preferably made of glass) and store it in the sauce shelf of your fridge.
This way you can expect your keto ketchup to last a month pretty easily!
Although we doubt it'll last more than a week considering how delicious this recipe of Keto Ketchup is!
How to freeze Keto Ketchup?
If you are looking to freeze your homemade keto ketchup for any future emergency uses, like a keto barbecue party for instance, then that too is totally a option!
Expect your frozen Keto Ketchup to last two months in the freezer easily if you follow the following steps!
1. Select a freezer friendly air tight container for the task. If you go for a plastic container, just make sure it's of good quality, food friendly and not toxic.
2. Freeze your keto ketchup in large batches to make the most of it.
3. Pack your keto ketchup in the containers and seal them tight. Keep these sealed containers in the freezer section of your fridge. It should take a day or two for the keto ketchup to freeze completely.
4. Whenever you feel like using your frozen keto ketchup just let it thaw in the warmer section of your fridge for 12 hours. Then give it a few good mixes and it's ready to be served!
Keto ketchup is such a healthy thing that we believe everyone should give it a honest try, and not just the ones who are on a keto diet.
