Living in Baltimore, there's something about the city this time of year makes it hard not to lean into the holiday spirit✨. The lights downtown, the Christmas ✨ markets, the cold air that starts to smell like cinnamon and pine, it sets the perfect tone🎄☃️. I’ve always enjoyed decorating, but in the past few years, it’s become something more than just a visual thing. It’s about creating a certain feeling, even if it’s just for myself and the few people who happen to stop by.
Even though I’m not married or living with kids, every December I still find myself pulling out the boxes of lights, garlands, and decorations, haha!! and yes, setting up an Elf on the Shelf!! Its just sooo much fun✨✨✨...!

And that’s the thing about me you know, even though I don’t have kids, this little elf has somehow become one of my favorite parts of the season. It starts as a bit of fun for me, but then when my brother drops by from Philly every year, or friends come over for dinner or a game night, the elf becomes this unexpected source of laughter for all of us🌟. They’ll walk in, see it hanging from the ceiling fan or frozen mid-marshmallow fight, and without fail, someone cracks up. It’s always the same: “Yo, what is wrong with this elf?” That’s the point. It’s dumb. It’s weird. And it’s fun.✨

This year, I added something new the Labubu. Yeah, it might sound random, but it fits right in. If you’ve seen Labubu, you know it has this chaotic, oddly cute energy that’s hard not to love🌟🌟
And honestly, it always reminds me how true it is that no matter how grown we get, part of us still craves that innocence, playfulness, surprise, and a break from being so damn serious all the time, right!! We say we’re decorating for the kids, but I think a lot of us are also doing it for that little part of ourselves that still believes in the magic of December✨✨

Which brings me to why I’m even writing this. Because while I’ve got friends who enjoy the elf antics as adults, I know most people use Elf on the Shelf to bring joy to their kids. And let’s be real it always works. Waking up every morning to a new scene, a new joke, a tiny bit of mystery tiny humans and even us love? It’s like having 24 days of Christmas magic leading up to the most amazing day. That’s why I’ve put together 30 Elf on the Shelf ideas. Whether you’re a parent, an uncle, or just someone who likes messing around during the holidays, you’ll have a bunch of ideas ready to go.

December in Baltimore Has Its Own Kind of Magic
Maybe it’s the lights on rowhomes in Hampden, or the way local neighborhoods go all in with lawn displays, but December in Baltimore just feels right. There's something grounded and gritty about the city, and yet it softens a little around the holidays. That’s the atmosphere I try to match at home, a little weird, a little nostalgic, and always welcoming!!

So if you’re anything like me, whether you’ve got kids or not or you’re looking to bring some joy into your mornings this season, these are for you.

But before we get into the list, let’s quickly cover the basics especially if you’re new to this or just getting started this year.
What Is the Elf on the Shelf Supposed to Do?
The Elf on the Shelf as we all know is a scout elf sent by Santa to keep an eye on things leading up to Christmas. As per the official story, the elf flies back to the North Pole every night to give Santa a report of good behavior, not-so-good behavior, you get the idea, then returns by morning and hides in a new spot.
For kids, it turns the countdown to Christmas into a daily game of “Where’s the elf?” But for the adults behind it, it’s a chance to get creative, and yeah, sometimes a little chaotic as well, with how and where that elf shows up next! Hahaha !!!

What Are the Rules?
The tradition comes with a few basic rules to keep the magic intact:
- No touching the elf – Now, If you do, it could lose its magic (at least, that’s what you tell the kids).
- The elf doesn’t speak or move while you’re awake – It only moves at night when everyone’s asleep!!!
- It leaves on Christmas Eve – That’s when it heads back to the North Pole until next year!!!
Pretty simple, but the fun is in what happens in between!!!!!
So if you’re anything like me, whether you’ve got kids or not — and you’re looking to bring some joy into your mornings this season, these are for you.
