Crispy Orange Chicken Tacos are a perfect Asian Mexican fusion recipe. Its got perfectly crispy chicken coated with a zesty, sweet and sour orange glaze and served inside warm tortillas with a crispy Asian coleslaw. Perfect for weeknight Taco dinner.
Coat your cubed chicken breast pieces first in cornstarch, then dip them into the beaten egg, and finally press each piece firmly into the panko breadcrumbs seasoned generously with salt and pepper.Arrange them in your air fryer basket in a single even layer. This approach is so much cleaner and simpler than deep frying! Air fry at 200°C (approx. 400°F) for approximately 15 minutes on each side until they develop a gorgeous, deep golden color and an irresistible crunch.Alternatively if you need to deep fry, simply just heat any neutral oil you use and once the oil is hot, carefully add the coated chicken in batches and fry over medium high heat for 2-3 min and remove on a tissue paper lined dish to soak out the excess oil.
While the chicken crisps up in the air fryer, heat a skillet over the stove. Melt a full stick of unsalted butter over very low heat.Add a generous handful of minced garlic and let it turn aromatic and fragrant. Stir in the dark soy sauce, orange marmalade, honey, rice wine vinegar, and freshly squeezed orange juice. Keep the heat low and allow it to gently simmer and reduce into a beautiful, glossy, sticky glaze.
Once the air fryer finishes its work, carefully transfer the hot, crispy chicken directly into the simmering sauce. Toss everything together gently until every single piece of chicken is evenly coated in that incredible sticky orange glaze.
Quickly throw together a simple coleslaw by combining shredded purple cabbage with a spoonful of mayo and a pinch of salt and pepper. Lay out your warm, toasted soft tortillas, add a generous helping of the sticky orange chicken, and pile on the creamy purple cabbage slaw. Finish with fresh orange zest, chopped cilantro, a scatter of sesame seeds, and a touch of red pepper flakes for that perfect finishing kick. Serve right away while everything is still warm and gloriously crispy!
Notes
Swap the chicken breast for boneless chicken thighs if you prefer a richer, juicier result that stands up even better to the bold glaze.
For a spicier profile, stir a tablespoon of sriracha or a few chopped fresh chilies into the orange sauce for a chipotle-inspired kick.
If you are looking for a lighter option, cauliflower florets make a surprisingly satisfying vegetarian substitute — they crisp up beautifully in the air fryer and absorb the orange glaze just as well as chicken or these Orange Tofu (in Air Fryer)
swap the purple cabbage slaw for a fresh mango salsa, add sliced avocado for creaminess, or drizzle the finished tacos with a quick sriracha mayo for extra heat and richness.
