This classic Southern banana dessert features slices ripe Bananas gently sautéed in a rich sauce of butter and brown sugar until tender. The addition of dark rum adds a deep and warm complexity that pairs beautifully with a scoop of cold butter pecan ice cream. It is a timeless treat that brings warmth and comfort to any table.
Peel the bananas and cut each piece in half right across the middle. Next, slice every half lengthwise down the center to create neat halves, then set them aside.
Melt the unsalted butter in a wide skillet over medium heat, then stir in the brown sugar and a pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg until the mixture is smooth and bubbling.
Carefully add the banana slices to the pan in a single layer and cook them gently for a few minutes until they begin to soften and become golden brown.
Pour the dark rum into the pan and let the sauce simmer gently to cook off the alcohol safely without any open flames. If you prefer a dramatic presentation with flames, take the skillet off the burner before adding the rum, carefully ignite it with a long lighter, place the pan back over the heat, and swirl it gently until the fire dies out and the sauce thickens.
Spoon the warm bananas and syrup immediately over scoops of cold butter pecan ice cream and some Pecan nuts. Enjoy!
Notes
Choose bananas that are ripe so they are sweet, but make sure they are still firm so they hold their shape during the sautéing process. DONOT USE OVER RIPE BANANAS
Serving Temperature: For the best contrast in texture and temperature, assemble and serve the dessert right away while the fruit and sauce are still warm.
Kid-Friendly Alternative: You can completely omit the dark rum and substitute it with a splash of apple juice and a teaspoon of vanilla extract to keep the sauce flavorful and alcohol-free.
