There's something with fall in Baltimore that prompts me to stop and absorb it all. It's the combination of the nostalgia and thrill that makes me adore this season so much.
To me, Thanksgiving and Friendsgiving, also is about the table as much as it is about food. Adorning a warm tablescape is a way of staging memories. I have discovered over time that it does not need to be elaborate or costly. Many of my go-to items have been from thrifty shops or even the dollar store, and I have found that you can make something genuinely inviting on a shoestring budget.
Nature is always my biggest inspiration. The changing colors of the leaves, the crunch of twigs underfoot, the scent of pinecones, I try to bring all of that indoors. Right before my guests arrive, I’ll step outside and grab a few fresh leaves, branches, or sprigs of herbs to scatter across the table. That last-minute touch always makes the table feel alive and seasonal.
How to Style an Aesthetic Fall Tablescape
For styling a fall or Thanksgiving table, it's all about layering textures, colors, and lighting to create warmth. Here are some of my favorite dos and don'ts to help your table sparkle without feeling overwhelming:

- Mix Textures: Mix the woods, ceramics, glass, and fabric to create a visually rich table.
- Play With Heights: Create depth with candleholders, plates stacked up, and layered linens.
- Add Natural Elements: Twigs, dried leaves, fresh sage, or even apples and gourds bring the outdoors in.
- Light Candles: Nothing creates atmosphere like candlelight. For safety or convenience, LED candles do just as well, too.
- Personal Touches: Handwritten place cards or small "Thankful" signs at each plate make it warm.
The Don'ts
- Don't Overcrowd: Reserve room for food platters and beverages.
- Skip Overly Bright Colors: Use warm, earthy colors for a cozy atmosphere.
- Avoid Too Many Patterns: Balance a bold piece (such as plaid napkins) with neutrals to maintain an elegant look.

How to keep it Classy on a Budget
You don't have to break the bank in order to make your table stand out.
- Secondhand Finds: Antique china, brass candlestands, and printed glasses tend to cost a lot less than new decor.
- Dollar Store Essentials: Chargers, glass vases, mini pumpkins, and artificial greenery form a good foundation.
- Do-It-Yourself Accents: Spray-paint mini pumpkins gold, create your own napkin rings, or put pinecones and cinnamon sticks in jars.
It's about combining a few show-stopping pieces with inexpensive basics to create a finished look.
Fall Tablescape Themes You Can Try
Finally comes the best part—selecting a theme that represents your taste and personality.
Rustic Charm
Imagine wooden chargers, burlap runners, mini pumpkins, and earthy colors. Top it off with dried wheat stalks in mason jars for an authentic harvest vibe.
Vintage Fall Décor
Employ vintage china with soft floral designs, brass candlesticks, and lace table runners. A couple of muted pumpkins or antique glass vases make it timeless.
Farmhouse Minimal Neutrals
Opt for linen runners, white pumpkins, eucalyptus sprigs, and black iron candleholders. It's soothing, clean, and warm.

Use a plaid table runner with white pumpkins and greenery. Incorporate golden cutlery for an elegant contrast.

Outdoor Cozy Setting
For an outdoor Thanksgiving feast, employ chunky throws on chairs, hang fairy lights or lanterns, and have a fire pit or heaters handy. Plaid blankets and cider thermoses will make it that much more memorable.
