I generally prefer bananas which have gotten a little ripe. The riper the bananas the intense the flavors. I really love working with ripe bananas. They provide a richer and tastier texture in our smoothie.
Along with Bananas I always make it a point to add some oats. Since we are not baking, therefore, you can always work with quick oats. Honestly, it doesn’t matter whether you are using old fashioned oats or quick oats. Both are perfect for our smoothie.
Flax Seeds – you might have seen that I have a soft corner for flaxseeds. I really enjoy the nuttiness of flaxseeds. They create a beautiful blend of sweetness which is not too intense neither too off-putting. It makes the smoothie richer.
Strawberry Syrup – I have used Hershey’s Strawberry Syrup for my recipe. However, you are free to use any strawberry you like. Both fresh or canned strawberries will work like a charm for this recipe. Since this is a typical Banana Strawberry smoothie, therefore I have made sure that I am not thrifty with the quantity of strawberry syrup. I am very generous with the amount of strawberry that I add in my smoothie. Not only does it makes it sweet but it adds a beautiful fruity flavor in our smoothie.
Almonds – I really prefer a little bite in my smoothie. You might guess from my recipes that I have an inclination towards nuttiness. From the flaxseeds and now the almonds you can guess that I have a penchant towards nuts. However, if you are allergic to nuts you can obviously avoid it and skip this step. For those of us who are not, I think we should definitely add almonds in our smoothie. And especially this smoothie. This is because a little dash of almonds would bring in the healthy qualities of Almonds in our smoothie and would also make our smoothie richer in texture.
Things that I have deliberately avoided in this smoothie?
Sugar: The strawberries and Bananas have their innate sweetness which is enough to make the smoothie taste sweet. Therefore I see no point in adding any extra sugar to a smoothie such as this.
Honey: I have avoided honey because it would make it unreasonably sweet. Moreover, honey has got a lot of calories. I think this smoothie is a lot better without extra sweeteners such as honey or Maple syrup. The fruits are already sweet. So why do we need that extra sweetness?
Whole Milk – I could have chosen whole milk but it is a source of an unreasonable quantity of fat. And why on earth would I make such a healthy smoothie unhealthy? Therefore I have deliberately avoided whole milk.
Other Ingredients which I think would be an excellent addition to this smoothie?
- Chia Seeds – Chia seeds would make an excellent addition to this fruity strawberry banana smoothie. They are extremely healthy as they are a powerful source of antioxidants.
- Yogurt – I think you can add some plain yogurt or thick Greek yogurt in your smoothie to make it a lot creamier. I had to skip it because it was not available to me at the moment.
How to Make a Strawberry Banana Smoothie
Honestly, there can be nothing easier than this. Add your bananas, your strawberries, milk, almond, oats, and some flaxseeds. Blend them up in a blender until its creamy and nice. Always remember that we need a thick smoothie. But it should not be soo thick that just one sip puts you off the hook. Therefore, you can add a little water just to bring it to a drinkable consistency.
