New York-Style Apple Crumb Pie just as the name suggests. Buttery, Moist, Soft, and Thick Crumb topping over Gooey and Moist and Delicious, Apple Pie filling, makes this dish, like its almost namesake - New York Style Apple Crumb Cake. However, I made this in the form of a Pie, and the results were beyond expectations!
Talking about Apples have you tried my Brown Butter Apple Blondies with Pecan Nuts or Stuffed Baked Apples or Southern Fried Apples or Cinnamon Apple Bread or Caramel Pecan Apple Crumble Cheesecake
With the Holiday season approaching, the restaurants even in New York are making it a point to dish out unique and creative Pies. The other day, I made a classic Apple Pie with lattice and the first thing which I thought, after having a bite of it is that I should try this with a thick crumb topping, just like a classic New York Crumb Cake.
And not just any crumb topping. Unlike the Classic Apple Crumble topping made with Rolled Oats, the New York-Style Crumb topping is made just using butter, flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. It's all about having that thick layer of crumb, also, which is soft and moist. And when you bite into it, you have that comforting Apple Pie! Yummmmmm!!!
I love New York-Style Crumb Cake. Its got a thick layer of crumb topping which is buttery, sweet, and soft. Just like my Apple Crumble Cheesecake, I wanted this Apple Pie to have a thick crumb topping. Also, the crumb topping in this one is moist, soft, and buttery. Talking about crumb cakes, I cannot wait to share with y'all my Blueberry Crumb Cake, Jammy Raspberry Crumble Bars, Vegan Pumpkin Coffee Cake with Buttery Streusel Topping, Banana Coffee Cake
And after I made this, the results were so good.
This Apple Crumb Pie didn't even last 30 minutes at my home. These are so so so delicious! 🙂
The thick, sweet, buttery, moist, and soft crumb topping just like a New York-style Crumb cake.
The delicious Apple Pie filling is sweet, tarty, and Cinnamon-y!
The Buttery Pie crust is crunchy and flaky.
And since Thanksgiving is looming around the corner, nothing beats a great Pie, not even a Crumb Cake 🙂
This Crumb Apple Pie can also be called - Dutch Apple Pie. This idea of an Apple Pie with Crumb topping actually originated in Pennsylvania Dutch.
However, I took it a step further, with a thick layer of crumb topping. Also, for a perfect New York-style taste, I have used just Brown Sugar for the Crumb.
Brown Sugar makes the Crumb topping moist. However, if you wish to have a crispier Crumb Topping, include more of Granulated Sugar and reduce the amount of Brown Sugar you're using. Also, extend the baking time by 5 more minutes.
How to make New York-Style Apple Crumb Pie?
The first step is to make buttery pie dough. You can learn to make the best homemade buttery Pie crust here. Also, you can make a vegan pie crust for a vegan version.
You can also use store-bought Pie crust. Layer it over your greased Pie dish. You can use your regular Foil Pie dish or use a deep Pie Dish.
The next step is to choose the Apples. I have used Tarty Granny Smith Apples for this recipe. I love Granny Smith Apples, especially for an Apple Pie because even after getting baked, it doesn't lose its texture.
You can also use Pink Lady or Fuji Apples for this recipe. I do not recommend to use Honey Crisp Apples for this recipe as it will make your Pie, way too sweet!
Also, I do not peel the skin of the Apples. Don't worry, the skin of the Apples is extremely healthy and won't ruin your Pie.
In fact, as my hubby says, the Apples with the skin, taste wonderful in a Pie. Also, the skin of Granny Smith Apples is really thin. And since I cut my slices, really thin (1/4 inches), the peel doesn't get caught in the teeth while eating.
However, if you're using any other variety of Apple or are a novice at knife skills, then I highly recommend you to peel the Apples and then use it.
I have cored the Apples and chopped them into 1/4 inch thickness. These thin slices are perfect for this recipe, as they get flavored easily and when they get baked, they turn out to be perfect.
Make sure that Apples are cut into even slices. Uneven slices of Apples will make some cook quickly and get mushy, while others might still remain hard.
The next step is to make the Apple Pie filling.
For that combine Chopped Apples with Lemon Juice, Brown Sugar, Ground Cinnamon, and Ground Nutmeg in a large mixing bowl and pour this into an unbaked pie crust.
The last step is to make the thick Crumb topping. For the Crumb topping, combine Brown Sugar with Flour, Cubed Cold Butter, and some Ground Cinnamon. Just combine all of this using your hands, until it gets coarse and mealy.
Layer this over the Apples.
Bake this Apple Crumb Pie for 1 hour 20 min at 320C or 160C.
After the Pie gets baked, allow it to cool down to room temperature for about 1-2 hours. Only after the Pie has cooled down completely, cut the Pie slices.
It is extremely important that you cool down the pie after it gets baked. Once the Pie gets cooled, the filling gets thicker and the crumb topping sticks to the top of the Pie.
Make-Ahead Instructions:
- You can make the Pie dough in advance and store it tightly wrapped in the freezer for 3 months.
- You can make the Apple pie filling, wrap it with plastic food wrap, and store it in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and then use it.
- To store an unbaked Apple Pie, wrap it up tightly, using an aluminum foil wrap as well as a plastic food wrap. Then label it and then go ahead and freeze this. The best part is, you do not even have to thaw the pie before baking it. Just pop it in the oven, uncovered it, and bake at 375F for about 50 minutes longer or until the crumb topping gets golden brown.
Storage Instructions:
- A completely Baked Apple Pie can be stored covered in the freezer for about 6 months. However, the only thing to be careful about is to wrap it up really tightly. So, I would recommend you to use Aluminum wrap as well as Plastic Food Wrap. This will prevent any cold and dry freezer air to come in contact with the Pie and it will stay fresh. Label the date and then freeze. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator, and bring it to room temperature before you serve it.
